What is Hip Preservation Surgery?
Hip preservation surgery describes all surgical procedures that are aimed at preserving the health of the hip, attempting to prevent or delay the onset of osteoarthritis and thereby attempting to avoid or delay the need for some form of hip replacement.
These procedures include:
- Hip arthroscopy (key-hole surgery).
- Osteotomies around the hip where either the femur or acetabulum (the bones of either ball or the socket of the hip joint) are broken and then realigned to improve their orientation.
What can be done when Hip Preservation either fails or is not appropriate?
- Hip Resurfacing - This procedure provides a new surface to the ball and a new surface to the socket of the hip joint. This results in a significant improvement in pain and also allows the return to a very high level of activity. This procedure is only appropriate for men under the age of 55.
- Hip Replacement - This procedure provides a new ball and a new socket and is indicated when the joint is either worn out (end-stage osteoarthritis) or affected by a disease process that causes premature failure of the joint.
